Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Eating Disorders

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Eating Disorders Eating Disorders Treatment Print Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Eating Disorders By Susan Cowden, MS facebook linkedin Susan Cowden is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a member of the Academy for Eating Disorders. One type of therapy you might be offered is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral treatment. It was developed in the late 1970s by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with  borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is now recognized as the treatment of choice for this population. In addition, research has shown it is effective for a range of other mental disorders including substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders. The word dialectical means that in DBT, therapists and clients work hard to balance change with acceptance, two seemingly opposing forces or strategies. For example, when undergoing  dialectical behavior therapy, your therapist will work with you so that you both accept yourself as you are, and are also motivated to change. DBT Requires Five Components Full adherent DBT treatment requires five components: 1. DBT Skills Training DBT skills training usually occurs in a group format run like a class during which group leaders teach behavioral skills and assign homework. The homework helps clients practice using the skills in their everyday lives. Groups meet on a weekly basis, and it takes 24 weeks to get through the full skills curriculum. Skills training consists of four modules: Mindfulness: the practice of being fully aware and present in the momentDistress Tolerance: how to tolerate distressing feelingsInterpersonal Effectiveness: how to express one’s needs and set boundaries to build healthy relationshipsEmotion Regulation: how to change emotions that you want to change 2. Individual Therapy DBT individual therapy focuses on increasing client motivation and helping clients to apply the skills to challenges and events in their lives. Individual therapy usually takes place once a week for as long as the client is in therapy, and it runs simultaneously with DBT skills training. 3. Coaching to Ensure Generalization of Skills DBT uses telephone coaching to provide in-the-moment support. The goal is to coach clients on how to use their DBT skills to effectively cope with difficult situations that arise in their everyday lives. Clients can call their individual therapist between sessions to receive coaching at the times when they need help. 4. Structure the Environment with Case Management Case management strategies help the client learn to manage his or her own life, such as their physical and social environments. 5. DBT Consultation Team to Support the Therapist The DBT consultation team provides critical support to the different team members who provide the various aspects of the DBT treatment, including individual therapists, skills training group leaders, case managers, and others who help treat the client or patient. Other Forms of DBT There are also many therapists who use DBT skills in individual therapy with clients. Some therapists also may offer a standalone DBT skills-training group. However, any of these components alone are not true or fully adherent DBT treatment. These individual elements of DBT treatment may still be beneficial but may not be as helpful as receiving all five components of the treatment. Dialectical behavior therapy has also been adapted for use in residential and inpatient treatment settings. Does Dialectical Behavior Therapy Work for Eating Disorders? Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven effective for many patients with eating disorders and is usually recommended as the first line of treatment, it does not work for everyone. This has led researchers to look for other treatments that may work for patients who do not respond to CBT. Specialists in eating disorders who learned about DBT drew an analogy between the function of eating disorders, behaviors in eating disorder patients and the function of self-injury in borderline personality disorder patients. Both types of behaviors tend to provide temporary relief from negative emotions. Thus, teaching patients how to regulate and manage effect makes sense. The results have been promising as the treatment does appear effective in slowing or stopping problematic behaviors in eating disorders. However, most of the research that has been done hasnt compared dialectical behavior therapy to other treatments (or to no treatment at all). The one study that compared DBT to active comparison group therapy for  binge eating  found no real differencesâ€"both treatments worked equally well. Most of the studies conducted on dialectical behavior therapy looked at treating people with binge-eating disorder and bulimia nervosa, not  anorexia nervosa. Who Should Try Dialectical Behavior Therapy? Given the current research on dialectical behavior therapy and eating disorders, it is likely to be most helpful for people suffering from  bulimia nervosa  or binge eating disorder. It is also likely to be helpful for clients who are suffering from borderline personality disorder and/or intense emotions in addition to an eating disorder. DBT is typically more intensive, more costly, and longer-term than individual outpatient treatment such as CBT, and so is not usually used as a first-line treatment. It may be an excellent option for patients who have not made improvements with CBT or other individual psychotherapies, and who struggle with binge eating episodes clearly triggered by negative emotions. DBT skills training can be an effective adjunctive treatment for individual therapy for eating disorders. Some of the skills that a person with an eating disorder might work on in dialectical therapy include practicing more mindful eating, learning to identify triggers, and improving responses to negative emotions or stressors.

Gun Control - 1403 Words

Gun Control: If not now, when? The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that gun for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. When it comes to protecting freedom, Americans, including those on the Supreme Court, recognize that personal liberties must often be modified for the safety and protection of others. Yet today’s gun rights advocates constantly cite the Second Amendment of the Constitution, the right to bear arms, when threatened by attempts to limit, but not eliminate, modern-day weapons. Piggybacking on this idea is our right to free speech; it is frequently regulated through obscenity and decency laws. There’s no technical definition of an â€Å"assault weapon†, however there are fully-automatic weapons, which fire continuously when the trigger is held down. Abstract This report will analyse the corporate activities and position of Next plc, focusing on clothing, which is the company’s main product area. The report firstly provides an overview of the history and background of the company as well as mentioned the state of the clothing retail market. Following the introduction the report then goes into deep analysis of Next, beginning with identifying the company’s key strengths and opportunities for future success, before going on to explore certain dangers with the corporate decisions and its market structure. We will write a custom essay sample on SWOT Analysis of Next plc or any similar topic only for you Order Now 1. Introduction Founded by Joseph Hepworth in 1864 as a tailoring business, and still holds clothing retail at the core of its products. For this reason this report will focus on Next’s clothing products as they are the company’s main product lines. Next Has grown from a small tailor to now being a constituent of the FTSE 100 index and bringing in ?550 million profit in 2011 alone (Next Corporate 2011.) To accomplish this outstanding feat the company has a unique set of attributes that contribute to its success, which show both a strong current market position as well as an optimistic future. However, the industry Next operates in is fraught with uncertainty, as Key note publications (2000) saw that many clothing retailers have had to rethink their strategy, due to the â€Å"declining real prices and soft demand patterns.† Therefore Next also faces certain threats to the company’s future success. 2. Analysis of Next plc 2.1. Strengths and Opportunities A key strength held by Next is the company’s adaptability, which is crucial in the ever evolving retail market according to Morganosky (1997.) Examples of this can be seen by the company’s steps in next day delivery services and home shopping networks (Next Corporate 2011.) Next has identified the growing demand for online purchasing (More than ?50 billion is expected to change hands online according to Tong (2010.)) Next has also ensured that the new business initiatives centre around key themes such as quality customer service, for instance there is a standard next day deliver for orders placed before 9:00 p.m (Next Corporate 2011.) Actions such as this have helped the company create a trusting atmosphere with their online service, which is seen byMiyazaki and Fernandez (2001) as one of the biggest difficulties in online retailing. Harris and Goode (2004) found that establishing an atmosphere of trust will help ensure further customer loyalty and sales. Next’s creative and responsive approach to retailing envisions an ambitious future, as the company’s financial statements show increased turnover from eight out of the last nine years (Next Corporate 2011.) As economic performance is a significant factor for clothing retailers (Investopedia, Date unknown) Next’s success implies a bright future. Asides from its practical approach to purchasing in stores and via online methods, Next’s stance on corporate responsibility also deserves some of the credit for this future, as the company produces annual corporate responsibility reports outlining its â€Å"social, environmental and ethical performance† as well as setting clear priority areas such as a 4% energy reduction in the 2011 report. (Next Corporate 2011.) Whilst Verschoor (2009) found that 22% of employees said the recession has negatively impacted the ethical culture within their company, Next keeps its actions in line with Toor and Ofori’s (2009) belief that ethical management will mediate corporate culture, increasing the company’s reputation for the general public and for the company employees. The company’s attitude towards providing an environment where â€Å"employees are supported and respected† is believed to help motivate the workforce to better results (Wolinski and Coates 2005.) 2.2. Weaknesses and Threats Whilst Next plc has been largely successful in the retail business the biggest threat to the company is its highly competitive market. Key Note publications (2000) cites that the discount clothing brands in particular â€Å"still has considerable opportunities to take sales away from the standard clothing market.† As people still feel the country is in a recession, many will be more selective with how they spend their disposable income, for instance Gold (2011) mentioned that 70% of people have had either a pay cut or pay freeze. Certainly luxury products like the clothes Next offers are still in danger of substitute products, as seen by Porter (1985) as one of the five key threats to a company’s competitive advantage. This threat is more so in the case of Next as the products they produce are fairly standardised and so are replicated by competitors such as Topman and River Island. Porter (2008) cited how strategy â€Å"rests in unique activities† and so the issu e the company faces is that with low priced clothing manufacturing available globally, how can it make its products unique to ensure future sales. As the clothing retail market is based primarily on price competition, any aspect of customer loyalty to a store or brand is severely diminished. Next’s reliance on its competitor’s prices showcases a kinked demand curve scenario, which was identified by Maskin et al (1988) as problematic for companies as their power over their own profit margins is reduced. It could be argued therefore that Next has little power to change its own profits as the company cannot control either the price or demand for their products. In addition, Padmanabhan (1997) acknowledged that retail clothing is a particularly uncertain market, due to the disposable income people spend on such products and the seasonal cyclical implications (for instance breaking news (2011) found that the snowy winter of 2010/11 significantly affected Next’s high street sales as people were not venturing out to buy clothes.) 3. Conclusion To conclude, Next plc is currently a tremendously successful organization, as shown by both its financial successes and its innovative stance on new aspects of clothing retail, such as online shopping. Next’s biggest strength is clearly in the company adaptability, which is crucial in the ever changing clothing retail market. In regards to the company’s future successes, Next has appeared to succeed in increasing its sales despite the recent economic recession. The company’s adaptive approach in addition to its strict stance on corporate responsibility puts future sales growth as a strong possibility. However it is also clear that Next operates in a very turbulent market. Certain academics point towards a shrinking demand for luxury products due to economic circumstances. This threat is intensified by the company’s lack of a unique selling point in its products and an unconsolidated market power, which indicates that the company’s future successes e ven if significant are out of its own control. Therefore the ideal recommendation implied is for Next plc to create a more unique appeal for its clothing lines to ensure its future successes. Also, review FREE Dissertation Topics right here 4. Lady Of Shalott Essays - Literature, British Poetry,

Lady Of Shalott For me the fall is an exhilarating time of year. A time of change, an in-between period of muddled and varied weather. For others who view fall as a short time before a dreary winter, fall takes on a less colorful face. Alfred Lord Tennyson uses fall metaphorically throughout "The Lady of Shalott" to illustrate how the Lady of Shalott's life (or lack thereof) progresses. Looking at fall at the macro level reveals that fall is a time of change. Like fall the Lady of Shalott's life saw very little change. Until there was a very sudden and abrupt sequence of events that led to the death (or winter) of her life. In addition viewing fall at the micro level one does not see a fixed display of weather. On the contrary, fall is made up of some clear and warm days and some cold and dismal days. This would lead to the belief that fall is neither hot nor cold, but that it is actually in the middle somewhere. In other words fall is a gray area. It is neither black nor white. A reference to this can be seen in the sixth line of stanza two when Tennyson describes The Lady of Shalott's abode as, "Four gray walls, and four gray towers." Likewise three key quotes help to illustrate three different stages in Lady Shalott's life. Tennyson characterizes the first stage of Lady Shalott's life where she is cursed and cut off from society as cold and somber. This feeling can be seen in, "Little breezes dusk and shiver (ln. 11). The second stage of Lady Shalott's life in which she is inspired by the knight, "The sun came dazzling through the leaves," is convincing evidence by testimony of the leaves that there is reference to fall (ln. 75). Finally Lady Shalott's death is metaphorically represented in, "The leaves upon her falling light," portraying the passing of fall into winter and her life into death (ln.138). In closing Alfred Lord Tennyson does an excellent job of using the season of fall as a hidden metaphor and insight into the life of Lady of Shalott.

Nora Should Stay essays

Nora Should Stay essays Ibsen made a very controversial act, by having Nora leave her husband and her family. After first reading the play I thought that what Nora did was the right thing to do. But after thinking about I now realize that wasn't the right thing to do. Yes, Torvald was not the best husband in the world, but Nora should have considered that before she married him. To turn your back on your spouse is one thing, but to turn your back on your children is another. Nora was around in an era were women were looked down upon, not considered equal to men, so it would be hard for her to find a job. If Nora were to leave her Torvald she would have no were to go. Nora was a doll all of her life, first to her father then to Torvald, if she were to leave more then likely she would just become someone else's doll. Torvald was not the best husband in the world, but Nora chose to marry him. Nora never really got a chance to know Torvald. Torvald had his eye on Nora from the beginning. So he help her father and for that Nora was grateful, and thus became Mr. & Mrs. Helmer. It sounds like a very romantic story, but little did Nora know what would be in store for her. Torvald treated Nora like she was his child, I guess that is because he took no part in raising his children the he and Nora had together. If Nora would have taken the time to find out if Torvald was the one for her, then maybe it wouldn't have taken her eight years to realize that she never really loved him. If you are unhappy in your home then you leave your spouse, but you are never to leave your children. Even though Nora never really spent much time with her children she loved them to death. When Nora finally decided to turn her back on Torvald she decided to turn her back on her children as well. It might not have affected the children right away, but eventually it would have. Girls need a women figure to talk to about female things. Not only that but if Nora left and then later on down the ...

The causes of the civil war Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The causes of the civil war - Essay Example In the South, slavery was becoming an outdated method of agricultural production as industrialization was taking hold. Similar economies in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe had already abandon the practice of slavery and there was no reason to believe that the US would not soon follow. However, by 1860 events and policies enacted since the nations birth had moved the US to the brink of civil war. If slavery was not really at the heart of Americas motivation for going to war, then what were the reasons? The reasons why nations go to war are usually various and complicated, and the American Civil War is not an exception. Although the main reason which provoked the two sides in the Civil war was slavery, three different aspects of the impact of slavery were at the center of the disagreements. These aspects are political, economic, and social. Slavery was certainly a moral issue in regards to the Civil War and was always a contributing influence to the multiple causes of war. Since Americas inception its leaders, such as Thomas Jefferson, well understood that slavery must soon be abolished. In an 1805 letter to William Burwell, Jefferson wrote, "The value of the slave is every day lessening; his burden on his master daily increasing. Interest is therefore preparing the disposition to be just; and this will be goaded from time to time by the insurrectionary spirit of the slaves".1 However, the founding fathers failed to include slavery in the original documents. In addition, the Federation was designed as a weak federal government with significant states rights. States rights, a central issue of the Civil War, had been heavily debated since the Continental Congress. The Articles of Confederation, the first US Constitution, confirmed that the Federal government should be weak and the states should retain their individual po wer.2 The need to abolish slavery, and the weak federal system helped perpetuate the issue towards ultimate war. The conflicting goals

Course evaluation paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Course evaluation paper - Essay Example (AHRQ, 2007) (See Table I – Recommended Immunization Schedule for Persons Aged 0 – 6 Years in the United States on page 6) As part of delivering good quality service to selected patients, segmenting the patient population is necessary to enable the community nurses to provide effective health care strategies in delivering a safe, efficient, effective, timely, patient centered, and equitable health care to patients. (Lynn et al., 2007; Institute of Medicine, 2001) The expected outcome for the community health care that focuses on immunization is to ensure that there will be a reduction of morbidity and mortality among the infants and children throughout the community. (Zimmerman et al., 1987) The intended target population for rendering the community health care which focuses on immunization is patients below six (6) years of age and below. In order for nurses to accurately identify the target patient population within a selected community, nurses will have to study the existing computerized patient record (CPR) within the community health care computer system. (Rivo, 1998) Adding the total number of children below six years of age plus the patients who are currently pregnant, the nurses could easily determine the total number of additional babies each month. In the absence of CPR system, nurses should ask the pregnant women to fill out a simple survey form which will be used in determining the size of target population for immunization and health care education for expectant mothers. Considering that there are some babies born within the community each month and the fact that the immunization schedule for new born infants up to six (6) years old is more likely to overlap at the time the schedule is due, the implementation of community health care immunization program should be continuously offered to the community at least once or

Urban vs Rural

Urban After reading Reran Harmonica's essay â€Å"Giving up my small-town fantasy† that was published in 3rd September 2014 in NY times, opinions section, I do agree her when she told us about her experience in living in two deferent places (rural and urban). And when she pointed out how big cities differ from small towns.. However, I disagree In others thoughts. In the beginning, she started by complaining from urban life style and how it is very hard to make enough money there, she also considered it a waste f time and effort. â€Å"We could not buy, we could not move, we were stuck. And we were getting older. There was nowhere to grow. That's why she moved from San Francisco to Hudson (a small town in New Jersey) with her boyfriend to have a better life after getting bored from the city life. Harriman and her boyfriend life started well, their financial situation was great there; they bought a house, she started a new work at a media start-up called modern farmer and Patric k (her boyfriend) also was very happy with his new work especially because he had the relaxation and the peaceful fife that he was deprived from due to the hustle and bustle of the urban. However Harriman could not stay there because she was feeling depressed and lonely with no social life, and that's why she went back to Manhattan. The article contains a picture of a lonely woman that couldn't find a friend to be with so she preferred to gather her things In boxes to travel far away without having any hope to stay, which means It was obvious that Harriman could not find a real solution for her problem, because she had to choose between making money with a lonely life or interesting life without enough money. The author words were clear and she transferred her opinion in a direct way. Harriman earns the readers' respect by the way of writing and by choosing social life instead of money. The author mentioned a study was published in 2010 by the Journal of economic geography that report s the reasons of the continually growing of some rural areas Instead of being disintegrated also she mention a research by the university of Minnesota confirms this information. The article warned to a very important point of why people usually think about traveling room one place to another that might be to meet their personal needs and individual interests because big cities is characterized by high building, malls, shopping centers, restaurants, a lot of activities, Hassle and bustle, and good services. While small towns are more comfortable and peaceful also housing and living expenses there are cheaper than big cycles. Harriman writing way convinced me because It comes from personal experience and reasonable arguments and I think that she did a great Job.However, I think Harriman could do something more to adapt the new life Tyler, like if she was more patient she might make new friends there. In addition, I think it's easier to make true friends in small town especially I have come to Evansville recently after living In two capital cities In two different countries and I do has his special needs, interests, and situation that decide which place is better for him to live in, big cities or small towns. Work Cited Reran Harriman. † Giving up my small-town fantasy', published in 3rd September 2014 in NY times, opinions section.

Some students today feel that all they have to do is just attend school just because of their parents’ wishes for them to receive a diploma. Some feel that classes are boring and frustrating and a waste of time and energy. Why do students of today feel this way?†¦show more content†¦Now how can you learn if you’re not interested? This is when the teacher should consider providing fun and games, praise, and love within the classrooms, making the classroom exciting and more interesting.
